Long before history was written, Mendoza was inhospitable. The desolate landscape was beaten by two uniquely ferocious winds, savage to the point of nearly toppling the Andes Mountains. Until the appearance of a third, wind that joined forces with the other two. Surprisingly, rather than creating a larger storm; calm ensued, and life followed. Rains arrived, and then warm sun and a fresh breeze. Mendoza flourished, and the three winds created a terroir ideal for grape growing. This is the reason we remain here, to produce wines with an epic origin.

THE STYLE
Trumpeter Sauvignon Blanc is an elegant, crisp white wine with yellow-green undertones. The nose proffers strong, persistent fruity aromas blended with notes of grapefruit, herbs and freshly cut grass. The mouthfeel is smooth and fruity with citrus character, and a refreshing acidity.
Pale yellow with steely glints. On the nose, fresh herbaceous aromas typical of the variety (freshly cut grass) combine with citrus notes. Flavour in the mouth reiterates the aromas, finishing with a long, memorable and slightly unctuous sensation.
Over the years, our Sauvignon Blanc has become our flagship, the jewel of our wine stable. Its crisp, off-dry palate hints at tropical fruit flavours such as passion fruit and grape fruit. Like many white wines, it favours white meats, and is ideal when chilled well and paired with seafood, chicken, paella or pasta. Still, even the greatest nobles bear new generations, and our white grapes do have some mildly tanned offspring.

In the vineyard :The grapes used for this wine comes from 20 – 30 year old bushvines planted high up in the Bottelary Hills. Soil types vary from decomposed granite to more sandy soils. The Muscat vineyards used in this wine are almost 50 years old and boasts with concentration and falvour. About the harvest: Grapes are picked at optimum ripeness around 22° Balling.
In the cellar: The juice was allowed some skin contact with the grapes. The juice always partially goes through a native yeast fermentation, before it is inoculated with a special commercial yeast Vin2000 producing rich ripe flavours in the wine.
The Muscat is picked as Noble Late Harvest when the grapes have picked up Botrytis and fermented to a residual sugar of about 140g/L. This is the element that sweetens the wine and make it so floral. It is fermented cold in stainless steel tanks over a period of 2 to 3 weeks at between 11 – 15° C and left on its primary fermentation leese for at least 3 months before refinement and bottling.
The grapes used to make this wine come from two adjacent old vineyards planted in 1981 and 1984 respectively. For obvious reasons the one vineyard is simply called the Spice Block and the other the Long Block. Yields are rarely above 7t/ha and therefore naturally produce wines of structure and superior concentration. Our soils consist primarily of deep, well-weathered granite with moderate amounts of clay and iron. Such soils elevate the aromatics and promote finesse in the wine.

In the vineyard :Yield: 15 tonnes/ha. Grapes are selected from the cooler areas within the Lutzville valley where the grapes give excellent aromatics and fruit forward flavours. In the cellar :Once grapes are harvested, they arrive at the winery where the fruit is gently pressed and only the free run juice is used. Using selected yeasts the juice then undergoes cold fermentation at 14 degrees Celsius for 2 weeks before lying on the lees for 3 months.
The Sixpence Sauvignon Blanc is produced as an easy drinking, everyday white blend. This wine consists of Sauvignon Blanc (50%) and Semilion (50%). The warm South African climate, produces a fruit forward tropical wine with heady aromas of pineapple, lychee and gooseberry. The addition of Semillon contributes to the tropical features of gooseberry, grapefruit and lemon zest with a healthy dose of minerals. This is a beautiful crisp and refreshing balance of fruit and acidity adding to the complexity of the blend.
Ageing: savor now or cellar for up to two years from vintage.
In the vineyard: Rain during the growing season caused vigorous growth colder spring temperatures and late flowering. Cooler conditions in early summer led to the harvest commencing late by up to two weeks on early cultivars. Ensuing warmer temperatures however brought the vintage back on schedule, followed by some cold spells that resulted in a longer ripening period.
Grapes from the Paardeberg area’s shale soils ripen slower before reaching physiological ripeness and produce grapes with bolder fruit structures. Vineyards in the coastal area, situated about 10 km from the ocean, produce grapes with herbaceous flavours that have a naturally high acidity due to the granite soils in which they grow. These soils are warmer and well drained, resulting in a shorter hang- time with earlier harvesting taking place.
In the cellar :This Cellar Selection white wine is specifically blended and made in an accessible and fruity style for everyday enjoyment. Harvested during February with ripe sugar levels and optimal acidity, the grapes reached the cellar in ideal condition to retain their fruity characteristics. Specific yeast strains were used which enhance the tropical fruit flavours in both Chenin Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc. Cool fermentation temperatures were maintained for three weeks to further enhance the fruity character and freshness of the individual wines. After cooling and stabilising the individual wines were blended together to create a balanced and harmonious wine.
